Altavista Colonel's

Golf
Remember those who have passed away on
September 11, 2001

And those who protect and serve our
country.
Welcome to the home page of Colonel's Golf
Many thanks to the Altavista County Club for providing
a great place for our golf team to continue growing as golfers and
teammates. The course is in great shape because Melvin Bruce and his
staff have put countless hours manicuring the nine hole layout.
Thanks to everyone at the club for providing us this opportunity.
Anyone that hasn't played there in a while should play our course and
visit and see for yourself what this growing town has to offer the golfing
community. I am a member and love it.

Today we faced a very good Appomattox team at our home course and lost by
13 strokes. At this point in the season, a win or loss is
meaningless except for the moral of the team. If you don't finish in
first place, during the regular season, a win or loss doesn't help you
when you enter the district tournament. There are no seedings.
I have emphasized this to our team all year, that we are playing the
regular season to prepare for one fabulous day on September 19th.
Today was one of those days. We got better as a group.
Altavista C.C. will be the hardest course that we play all season.
We played a solid round, except for a few holes. If each golfer
could have eliminated that one or two bad shots, we could have won this
match; however, we didn't and those lessons will put us in a better
situation to have that great round come tournament time. I am
confident that we will be ready and rise to the challenge.

We shot our lowest score of the season. And as a team we had 6
scores that were very acceptable. It appeared to me that we had a
lot more confidence than we've had in the past. it was a very
competitive match that came down to the last scores coming in. I
wish we could have come out on the winning side; however, I am very proud
and excited at where our team is, at this point in the season. We
now play a very good Appomattox team on Tuesday at our home course.
Chatham 9/09 at
Altavista C.C.

Timothy Fenn- 52
We were coming off of the lowest score against Nelson and this was a very
disappointing performance. Tuesday was the highest total of the
season for us. The greens were holding and the fairways were
perfect; however, it just seemed like were weren't able to find either
today. Our next match is Thursday at William Campbell.
Nelson 9/04 at Winton C.C.
Altavista- 173
Nelson- 171
Leighton Bennett- 40
Jackson Finch- 42
Taylor Scott- 45
Stephen Perkins- 46
This is a match i wish we could have a mulligan on; however, in match
play, they don't allow mulligans. We got two nice scores out of
Bennett and Finch, yet we couldn't get another low round in. We had
defeated Nelson on our course and it would have been a great boost to the
team to be able to get another victory on their course.
Gretna 9/2 at Cedars C.C.

Gretna- 171

Taylor Scott- 45
Timothy Fenn- 47
Stephen Perkins- 48
We played pretty well today at Cedars. Anytime we are under 180, I
am pleased. Leighton Bennett had a very consistent round of golf;
however, we were not able to capitalize on his round by shooting a couple
more low scores. The loss evened our record to 3-3. As a
whole, i am very pleased with how our team is playing and the
contributions our 9th graders are making.
Dan River 8/26 at Altavista C.C.

Scott Robertson- 49
It was a a rainy afternoon and the Colonel golf team had its best round of
the year. Leighton Bennett lead all golfers with his best round of
the year. In these conditions, any round in the mid forties is a
good score. Now we have a buy date on Thursday and we need to
prepare for Gretna. If we can improve our bottom two scores, we will
have a good shot of competing with them.
Appomattox
8/21 at Falling River C.C.
Altavista- 185
Appomattox- 149
Leighton Bennett- 44
Jackson Finch- 45
Scott Robertson- 48
Cory Coffey- 48
We didn't score as low as I would have hoped for today. This was our
highest team total for the year; however, Falling River C.C. was extremely
dry and a lot of shots that normally would have been in play found the
creeks or rolled out of bounds. We have to do a better job of
recognizing the course conditions and not trying to do too much.
When we are able to do that, we will be more competitive on a daily basis.
Our next match is Tuesday Aug 26 against Dan River. The match will
be played at Altavista C.C. at 4:30.
William Campbell 8/19 at Altavista C.C.
AHS- 179
William Campbell- 198
Bennett- 41
Finch- 42
Coffey- 45
Perkins- 51
We lowered our team score by 2 strokes again. That is the third
match in a row that we have improved. Cory Coffey shot his lowest
round of his early career. Leighton and Jackson both had solid
rounds. I am very proud at the work ethic and dedication that the
team is showing. Our next match is Tuesday Aug 21 at Falling River.
We play a very strong Appomattox team.
Chatham 8/14 at Cedars C.C.
AHS- 181
Chatham- 161
Bennett- 39
Perkins- 45
Taylor Scott- 47
Cory Coffey- 50
We lowered our team score by 2 strokes; however, Chatham has a very good
team. Bennett shot a really nice round and Taylor Scott provided a boost;
however, to be able to contend with the likes of Chatham and Appomattox,
we will need career rounds out of all of our golfers. And that is
something that is unlikely out of our young squad. I am very pleased with
our result today; however, we still need to do a better job on our
putting. Our next match is Tuesday 8/19 at A.C.C. at 4:30 vs William
Campbell.
Nelson 8/12 Home Match
AHS- 183
Nelson- 188
Leighton Bennett- 40
Stephen Perkins- 45
Jackson Finch- 46
Cory Coffey- 49
This match came down to the last group and Cory Coffey, who is a 9th
grader, stepped up and shot a personal best of 49 to help us get our first
victory of the season. In golf, it is never one golfer but a combination
of the four lowest golfers (out of six); however, our returner golfers
know that we are going to have to count on one of our ninth graders to
step up and shoot well. And in this match Cory did that. For us to
compete this year, Bennett, Perkins and Finch are going to have to have
low scores, and they shot well enough to allow us to back into a
victory.
Altavista club golf
team will begin soon
We will have the middle school club golf team again.
Coach Sid Weeks will be helping me with coaching the kids. They will
have their first meeting once school begins.
